Don’t settle on something that sounds good. LOVE it.
Hey there!
A little bit about me – you may find interesting! I’ve worked for Verizon for 23 years! Funny part is, I never thought this would be my career. All of my life I wanted to be a veterinarian. I worked for a Vet when I was in high school and I was introduced to taking care of small pets (dogs and cats). I learned basic functions / tasks like giving vaccines and how they worked (this was my first introduction to the Corona Virus (did you know we vaccinated dogs for Corona?). I learned how to sterilize and pack surgery packs. I was included when the vets needed extra hands to deliver puppies during a Cesarian Sections (even learned CPR).
This sparked my desire for a college choice. I attend a 4 Year college and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology. Zoology? Well, think of that as Biology without the plants! (Animal Life). 4+ years (and extra one with more classes) – I applied to Vet School while working as an RVT (State Certified Registered Nurse) in an Emergency Vet Clinic. I loved learning. I loved using my knowledge and the science that I learned in school to care for the most vulnerable (and unable to communicate) patients. The highlight – a Great Dane named Tinkerbelle with Cancer. I was her Oncology nurse for 8 months.
Science has no boundaries – what you can do with it. How you can change the world one small step at a time! How you can treat people and our environment. There are so many way that Science touches us and changes us.
Now I work for Verizon. Some people laugh but how does Verizon translate from a BS in Zoology or Veterinarian Medicine? I use science every day. I work for our Project Management team to create and unravel offers and opportunities – “mini science projects”. I use similar methodologies and strategies and step processes – hypothesis and results.
Its amazing to look around you – Science is everywhere! You can make an impact on lives around you. Work hard in school. Investigate what interests you. Don’t settle on something that sounds good. LOVE it. Find your spark and investigate. Once you find a direction – work hard. Take classes that challenge you. Ask questions and learn. Change is ok – if you don’t love what you do, try something else!
Apply for opportunities that are presented – you can’t “win” if you don’t throw your hat in the ring. Look for scholarships and grants that can help elevate you to your full potential. Don’t take no for an answer. As for the reasoning and challenge it.
Best of luck in your path forward. Set a goal and achieve it. Then set another one.
