Lean on your passion.
Hey there!
I would like to take this time to tell you a little bit about myself and how I got started in STEM. I am a black female, first generation college graduate in my family. I have worked in the telecommunications industry for over 30 years.
Entering high school, I didn’t have clear direction or guidance on the importance of choosing high school classes that would drive towards a field of study in college and ultimately a career in technology.
The one thing I knew was that I enjoyed my math classes in high school. Therefore, I decided to study mathematics in college even though I did not take all the college prep courses in high school. I decided to lean on my passion. Upon entry to college, I had to take an entry level college math course. Once I completed the course, I was on my way taking advanced math, including algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus and differential equations courses. It was so fulfilling and rewarding to study amongst some of the brightest math students who looked like me. I learned complex mathematics and science. I graduated college with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science.
I will close by saying, technology shows up in many disciplines. STEM has a place in many different career fields. If you have a passion for logical thinking and problem solving, there is a place for you in STEM. The road may not be easy but the work and effort will prove rewarding in the end.
