A skill made my life much more successful.
Hey there TechDiva!
So why should you care about a career in STEM? What I would say is if you find some part of STEM interesting then you should consider following that path rather than find some generic job by getting a general education. As with other career paths there will be challenges but if you really enjoy what you are doing then you are not just showing up for a job.
I am the son of a butcher but was curious about computer programming back in the early ‘70s after talking with a cousin who was taking fortran in a college course (I was 13 at the time). I was lucky enough to be in a school district that had a computer programming course at the local vocational technical school so I signed up. I found that even though I was not a match wizard, that computer programming was a natural fit for me. Of course I have had to refer to some books to figure out how to do some of the code (easier to find it in a book than learn something that I really don’t need everyday). Now some 50 years later I still like what I am doing and my son (who picked up coding in his teenage years) also has been quite successful.
Sure I worked pumping gas, taking papers off a news press, mowing grass, and such. But once I had a skill, my life was much more successful.
