Continue to find the joy and strength for your gift to shine.
Hey there!
Congratulations on following your passion to see where a career in STEM will take you! There are so many places and ways that coding, engineering, or science are used today. You may not see someone like you in that position, but the people you work and build with take many shapes, beliefs, and approaches. That’s what makes STEM so amazing – anyone can find a place with the training and opportunities out there.
I’m a project manager and workflow design engineer. My team takes the process of getting work done and builds the systems, user views and reports to complete the transaction and track where the user is in the process. The work is amazing because I get to solve interesting problems and make it easier for the users.
How did I get into a STEM career? My Father was an engineer. I remember pictures of him at work and thinking “That’s a lot of men.” When I was graduating High School, I started looking at both engineering and computer science. I decided to follow the type of work rather than the people. And you know, once I found the work I liked, I found friends in it. Those friends then helped me find other projects. Not everyone welcomed me and sometimes I had to work for my voice or others to be heard. Both what worked and what didn’t work helped me find what I enjoy, see where I can contribute, and how we do that to shape the world around us.
I hope that you continue to find the joy and strength for your gift to shine!
