Failure is just practice for success.
Hey there!
My Name is Naje. I have been working as a data scientist for about 4 years. I enjoy the work that I do as the work is always different, mentally challenging and I am able to bring my insight from growing up as a African American towards data collection and add my own style towards coding and presenting. I hope this letter encourages you to try to enter the S.T.E.M field or at least give you some tips on what to avoid as you grow in your journey.
I did not go to school for a degree in computer science I was self taught and what I learned along the way was experience and being vocal are the best way to grow. A coworker pointed out to me that we had read access to the SQL data base so we wouldn’t hurt anything by practicing querying and if we did it in relation to our work our manager would support the effort we place in to learning. I then looked for free websites like geeks for geeks and W3schools to learn about coding. Using these free resources I was able to improve my skills and by talking to others around me or on forum boards I was able to improve and automate job tasks as well as personal tasks such as making a budget sheet that updates from my statements. Here are a few key takeaways I would like you to have:
Learn the concepts (this can be transferred to other jobs or parts of life)
Failure is just practice for success (I learned the most from looking up error codes when my code failed)
When asking for help state what you tried (this saves time and shows that you tried before asking)
Coding is like fashion given the assignment(problem) you are free to code to complete the task (there are more efficient ways but you learn that as you progress)
I hope you take a step towards S.T.E.M I already know you will be great at it with practice and time.
