Never give up!
Hey there!
Congratulations on choosing a STEM career! This is an exciting time to get into one of these fields, as technology changes almost every day. First a bit of my history. I graduated in 1989 with a bachelor of science degree in Anthropology, which at first I had no idea what I would do with, however, I soon came into a career as an archaeologist and did that for close to 17 years! I was able to visit many very interesting places and work on some spectacular historic and prehistoric sites, as well as learning quite a bit about the “new” GPS technology and mapping, computer graphics, etc. After the economic downturn in the early 2000s that field dried up and I was now looking for a new direction. I went back to school and received an Associates degree in Healthcare Business Informatics, which included a year of computer sciences including coding, database management, and advanced networking technologies. This led me to where I have been that past 9 years, working as a Technical Support expert for Verizon Wireless! Now is where I give you a first bit of advice: Never give up! It’s never too late to get started in one of the STEM fields or to re-route your career path from one to another.
My second bit of advice that I’ve learned over the years is to not take for granted what you are learning in your math classes! You may think at times “When am I EVER going to use this again?” You would be surprised at how much you use more advanced math in your daily lives and in your career, especially when it’s a STEM field! So absorb all the information that you can learn, work hard at it, and most importantly, HAVE FUN! Science and Technology are fascinating subjects and when learning is fun, it sticks with you! Congratulations again!!!
