Take advantage of ANY extra credit that is offered.

Hey there!

Let me introduce myself, my name is Kathryn. I have worked for Verizon for 20 years now and have been proud to grow within the organization. They also provided tuition assistance so I could obtain my degree. Personally, I am a single mom of a 19 year old son. He played baseball so being his biggest cheerleader was one of the things I miss the most now that he is away in college. I am also a dog mom (she's 160 pound Newfie) and she has been what keeps me company now that I am completely alone. Lastly, I love to travel and try new foods from around the world.

It is so exciting to hear you are choosing a STEM career. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics programs open the door to so many opportunities in the workforce. I remember when my son was applying for scholarships there were so many STEM ones being offered- the need is BIG!

I do want to share just a few study tips/tricks with you. First, if you are easily distracted like myself, make sure you are blocking dedicated study time and have a quiet place that's just you to study. Second, find a study group. I learned so much when we met to discuss and study together. They helped with topics I wasn't really grasping but also speaking out loud helped me retain the information so when the test popped up I was easily ready and knew the material. Lastly, Take advantage of ANY extra credit that is offered. That saved me with a quiz I bombed and it keeps your stress low knowing you have that buffer.

I am so excited to support and learn about Black Girl Code. I know there are still a lot of challenges with diversity and inclusion in the workplace and I want to be a change agent. We are currently celebrating Black History Month and I love learning about cultures and the history of people and how far they have come. I know you are going to do great things in the world!!

Best Wishes for you!

Kathryn
