My name is Jay Matthey and I am an Associate Director of Network Operations for Verizon. My team is responsible for ensuring that our network is running smoothly for our Verizon FiOS customers! One thing that I have learned in my career is that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are all around you. I have always been interested in technology, but I never thought that it would be a career path for me. I spent my time in school trying to find ways to avoid numbers and data, whenever possible. As an adult, I realized how powerful these tools actually are. Understanding how to use data to analyze decisions and make the world around you better is like a puzzle. I find it be both challenging and rewarding to see the world through the scope of STEM!

I thought I’d share a favorite tip I use to capture notes and easily find areas in my notes when I need to go back and review things. This can be used to help study.  When your in class, assuming you are using a laptop with Microsoft Notes, you can create a virtual notebook for each subject. It automatically captures the date, you can name the tabs for each topic and type in your notes. If you need to search on a subject or name, simply type it in the search bar and it finds that information through your whole set of notes. I’ve found it really helpful when you need to refer back to comments or data points.

Let me introduce myself, my name is Kathryn. I have worked for Verizon for 20 years now and have been proud to grow within the organization. They also provided tuition assistance so I could obtain my degree. Personally, I am a single mom of a 19 year old son. He played baseball so being his biggest cheerleader was one of the things I miss the most now that he is away in college. I am also a dog mom (she's 160 pound Newfie) and she has been what keeps me company now that I am completely alone. Lastly, I love to travel and try new foods from around the world.

Below are some things that have helped me.  When I study I like to rewrite my notes that I have taken. That puts it all fresh in my mind.  Flashcards are really helpful. You can also make the flashcards into a game that helps you remember what is important in your studies.

Congratulations on choosing a STEM career! This is an exciting time to get into one of these fields, as technology changes almost every day.  First a bit of my history. I graduated in 1989 with a bachelor of science degree in Anthropology, which at first I had no idea what I would do with, however, I soon came into a career as an archaeologist and did that for close to 17 years! I was able to visit many very interesting places and work on some spectacular historic and prehistoric sites, as well as learning quite a bit about the “new” GPS technology and mapping, computer graphics, etc. After the economic downturn in the early 2000s that field dried up and I was now looking for a new direction.

As I think about the time I have spent studying for school and other things that require my attention I strongly believe that my best advice that I can give when it comes to being able to study.  Find a quiet place that does not have any distractions.  Put some music on that causes relaxation and reduces stress.  When you find calming music to put on it allows your brain to relax and put you into a mode where it can absorb the information you are studying.

Other girls once stood where we are now. The fields of the sciences, technologies, engineering, and mathematics were male-only areas at one point in time, a time that was not long ago. The doors were locked for girls, so they had to charge through them, unpick the locks, or climb in through the windows. These girls had to light the torches that brighten our paths and allow us to simply walk through the doors that were shut for them. We stand on the shoulders of History written by other women, and it is our job to pass it along. The important thing we need to remember is that it is not the responsibility of just one girl; we all bear the obligation to carry the stories of those before us together.
