Create and maintain great study habits.
Hello,
My name is Sean Curry and I am currently operating in the role of an Associate Director here at Verizon. I have 26 years with Verizon and over 28 years in the industry of Telecommunication/Communications. I wanted to share with you a few things that I hope will help you in you along your journey of STEM career preparation.
When we look at the need for balance in the work place as well as learnings across all sectors of what makes for rewarding and successful careers, we see that STEM is one of the paths that is least populated by Black Americans. I recently read some information presented by the Pew Research Center that stated that Black students earned no more that 9% of the STEM degrees awarded in 2019 across the bachelors, masters and doctoral level degree types. This would say that we need you to stay the course and work hard to understand and complete the paths in which you have begun. Since Black Americans make up approximately 13% of the US population and only 9% of that have completed Degrees in STEM we have some work to do as a unit of people.
I encourage you all to be the group to create and maintain great study habits, setting aside a specific time of day or afternoon while you are still full of energy to study and ensure that you comprehend what you are reading, test yourself on the things that you read and even recite aloud the things that you have tested yourself on. I have found that reciting aloud helps to retain what you might have read and studies will also tell us that only 5% is retained from reading, there is another 10% retained when heard or lectured and then another 20% when learned in the format of audio-visual, which says be comfortable with using all three paths to retain because we need you in this space of STEM careers.
I wish you much success as you move forward in area of STEM.
Peace and Blessings to you along your journey!
