Diverse backgrounds are truly valued.
Hey there TechDiva!
It is truly amazing that you are considering a career in STEM. As someone who pursued a Masters in Medieval Literature, studying Chaucer and Anglo-Saxon, but has subsequently enjoyed a 25+ year career in technology, I can tell you from experience that my diverse background, experience, interests, and skills are truly valued every day. Yours will be too!

Be clear, be confident, and don’t overthink it.
Hey there TechDiva!
My name is Catrice and I am a math instructor in one of the inner city schools of Chicago. I have been in the education field for 10 years. I am also in charge of the STEM program within the after-school program. Since the age of 12, I have always been interested in math and knew that I wanted a career that included math and kids. I believe that anything pertaining to science, technology, engineering, and math is our future. As a math educator, I make sure to expose and explain the importance of entering a STEM career. Having a STEM career is not only engaging but also will help with your problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Gamification is big in technology.
I hope this note finds you having a great day! I wanted to write and let you know I fully support your choice of choosing a STEM career.

Where your strength lies.
My name is Denise and I am a part of the STEM family. I became interested in coding my senior year in high school. This was not my original plan for my life. I wanted to be a lawyer but after taking an elective course and realizing that I was good at coding, I decided to pursue this as my major in undergraduate school. I graduated from Hampton University in 1989 with a B.S. in Computer Science. I have been blessed to have a career at Verizon for almost 32 years. Guess what? I started out as an entry-level developer.

Tips to follow in school.
I am Raja. I have been working in Information Technology from last 18 years. I did my Master of Science in Information Technology from Kennesaw State University, Georgia, USA.
I am from poor family from India. We came out of poverty because of my STEM education. I have come this far to USA is because of my STEM education in Engineering field. I witnessed all my classmates girls and boys in my Engineering College are having fabulous career and life.

Mark your footprint in history.
i am so proud not only because I too am a woman in tech, but because this role is so important. We need to elevate more women into the tech world and allow them to also have their footprint marked in history. You have chosen a field where women can be underestimated, undervalued, and sometimes even patronized.

The journey will bring forth rewards.

Endless technology careers.
My name is Chad and I’m a Client Partner in Chicago. I support global enterprise or big businesses keep their assets connect, from little gadgets that help keep food fresh and semi-trucks that get it to our groceries to patients and doctors using iPads.
Not really knowing the city life, I grew up in a small town in western Kentucky. I just happened to get a job at a tv and parts retail store when I went away to try college. I fell for tech and, even though it took years later to finish a degree, studying and learning what you love while you go is the most fun.

Elevate and separate yourself.
I have two daughters and I want to share with you the same message I share with them about the importance of your education. There is nothing in this world that will separate and elevate you in life more than your studies. It is literally the gateway to opportunity. It may feel like it’s not useful, that it’s work (and at times it is) but its value is something that cannot be overstated.
So, find an interest and be curious, in fact stay curious. It will grow into something you’re passionate about and ultimately something you become really good at and before you know it a career.

You can overcome anything.
Keep on studying and asking questions. Work hard and be curious. Even if life is challenging, you can overcome anything. Believe in yourself, ask for help and keep on dreaming! Don’t ever give up!

It is STEM that shapes our society.

Take advantage of STEM careers.
My name is Joe and I am currently an Area Manager at Verizon. I have worked at Verizon for the past 24 years and I wish that the STEM program was available when I was attending school. You should definitely take advantage of the STEM career as I feel it is a great opportunity to prepare and enhance your skills. STEM based education teaches more than science and mathematics concepts. The focus on hands-on learning with real world applications Helps develop a variety of skill sets, including creativity and 21st century skills that you should take advantage of. You should never stop learning and always strive to be the best that you can be.
