It is truly amazing that you are considering a career in STEM. As someone who pursued a Masters in Medieval Literature, studying Chaucer and Anglo-Saxon, but has subsequently enjoyed a 25+ year career in technology, I can tell you from experience that my diverse background, experience, interests, and skills are truly valued every day. Yours will be too!
Across industries, we have an unfortunate diversity problem in the STEM disciplines. Women, and women of color in particular, are woefully underrepresented. I have had the privilege of leading teams throughout my career and something I learned early on is that our teams performed better when we had diversity of thought on them. We are always better when we have varying points of points and experience—this contributes to improved creativity and better decision making.
Know that your unique background makes your point of view important. What you bring to the table is exclusively yours and is valuable.
