It is amazing to hear about your involvement with BGC, and their unwavering commitment to empower Black girls and gender-nonconforming youth, who are continually challenged in their daily lives.  I am excited to hear and see all the amazing innovative and problem solving you bring forward, which, no doubt, will make a significant impact both today and in the future.  This past year, I watched, comforted, cried and cheered with a very dear friend whose 26-year-old, only child, made the decision to transition.  Her STRENGTH helped her to get out of bed each morning, her COURAGE allowed her to share the journey with friends and family, her CONFIDENCE gave her a sense of hope that the future, although different, will be as bright as ever and her UNMATCHED RESILIENCE powered her into believing that she could do and face anything, with kindness and grace.

I don’t believe many people realize how important a STEM career is. For instance, take the pharmaceutical industry. You could almost take all aspects of STEM when working in this trade.  You need to understand the science behind a medicine being created to help a person with a specific diagnosis. Technology helps us understand how the chemical makeup of this medicine could either help or (hopefully not) hinder someone’s progress in healing.

My name is Lisa and I work at Verizon and have had various STEM related roles from Quality Assurance tester, Developer and Requirements and data analyst.  I have seen more females slowly coming into this field but it is still very male dominated. We need more girls like you to continue to ensure we have a diverse group of amazing women in the STEM fields. Technology is always evolving so there is always something new to learn. I hope this finds you well.  I would like to start by telling you a little bit about myself.  I started my career with Verizon 36 years ago as a 411 Operator.  I was in this position for a little over 10 years.  I then had the opportunity to transfer to the Database Maintenance Center for 911.  This is where the 911 database administrators manage all Landline telephone numbers ensuring the customer is listed at a correct address for emergency responders.   A key element of managing data is making sure it’s accessible to those who are authorized to view it and protected from those that aren’t.  Database administrators help to keep all of that information safe.  Hard work and continued learning have me now in a Senior Management position.

I help everyone who calls in to work through any issues on their device and service.  I was one that started out with Verizon not wanting to do anything but normal customer service for Verizon because I did not consider myself a “techy” person but I decided, “NO!! and that I can do anything no matter what and will learn to be great at it all” I was a very hard tradition but now I absolutely love it and get such a great feeling when I have solved a problem, especially 1 that has not been fixed by several other reps.
